POPIA Compliance
This notice explains how The Mathematics Continuum complies with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) — South Africa’s data-protection law — and the rights it gives you over your personal information. It should be read together with our Privacy Policy.
01Our commitment to POPIA
The Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (“POPIA”) gives effect to the constitutional right to privacy in South Africa. The Mathematics Continuum is committed to processing personal information lawfully, fairly, and transparently, and to upholding the eight conditions for lawful processing set out in POPIA.
02Responsible party and Information Officer
The Continuum is the “responsible party” for the personal information it processes. Our Information Officer oversees POPIA compliance and handles data-protection requests and complaints. You can contact them at hello@getcontinuum.co.za.
03The eight conditions we apply
We process personal information in line with POPIA’s eight conditions:
- Accountability — we take responsibility for lawful processing.
- Processing limitation — we collect only what is necessary, with consent or another lawful basis.
- Purpose specification — we collect for clearly defined educational purposes.
- Further processing limitation — we do not use information in ways incompatible with those purposes.
- Information quality — we keep information accurate and up to date.
- Openness — we tell you what we collect and why, as in this notice and our Privacy Policy.
- Security safeguards — we protect information with appropriate technical and organisational measures.
- Data subject participation — we honour your rights to access and correct your information.
04Special protection for children
Because we serve learners, much of the information we process may relate to children. POPIA affords children’s personal information special protection. We process it only with the consent of a competent person (a parent or legal guardian) and limit it strictly to what is needed to deliver the learning service.
05Your rights as a data subject
Under POPIA you are entitled to:
- Be notified that your personal information is being collected, and when it has been accessed unlawfully.
- Request access to the personal information we hold about you.
- Request that we correct or delete inaccurate, irrelevant, or unlawfully obtained information.
- Object, on reasonable grounds, to the processing of your information.
- Withdraw consent where processing is based on it.
- Submit a complaint to the Information Regulator.
06How to exercise your rights
To access, correct, or delete your information, or to object to processing, email hello@getcontinuum.co.za with enough detail for us to identify you and your request. We will respond within a reasonable period and may need to verify your identity before acting.
07Cross-border transfers
Some of our service providers may process information outside South Africa. Where this happens, we ensure the recipient is subject to laws, binding rules, or agreements that provide an adequate level of protection consistent with POPIA.
08Security and breach notification
We maintain reasonable safeguards to protect personal information against loss, unauthorised access, and misuse. If a security compromise affects your personal information, we will notify you and the Information Regulator as required by POPIA.
09The Information Regulator
If you believe we have not handled your personal information in accordance with POPIA, you may lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa. We would, however, appreciate the chance to resolve your concern first — please contact hello@getcontinuum.co.za.
